MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy-drama that follows the journey of Merita (Sonequa Martin-Green), a US Army veteran from Afghanistan who is at loggerheads with her family, Zoe (Natalie Morales), her deceased best friend. a friend from the army. Despite the persistence of her VA counselor (Morgan Freeman), the tough love of her mother (Gloria Reuben), and the frivolity of her unexpected love interest, Merritt’s cozy and dysfunctional friendship with Zoe keeps the duo isolated from the world. That is, until Merritt’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris), who is at the family’s lake house, begins to lose his way and is denied help. At its heart, it’s a buddy movie about complicated friendships, broken families, and the complicated ways we process grief.
